Internship in Ghana : HIV/AIDS Project
HIV/AIDS remains one of the most destructive health threats in many African countries - including Ghana . Every year, hundreds of people, including children, die from the effects of this killer virus. IFRE's partners work to advance adolescent reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention. Using the "Stepping Stones" approach, local organizations focus on promoting behavioral modifications through facilitating discussions covering HIV-prevention and sexual health within community groups - including both in- and out-of-school programs for youths, clients at antenatal clinics, and general community meetings. Interns are mainly involved in counseling and education. This is an excellent opportunity for interns interested in fostering awareness of the disease and doing work to change attitudes and behaviors toward those unfortunate enough to be infected. Furthermore, this project is open to any interns willing to share their love, time and compassion with the HIV/AIDS-infected individuals.
Skills/Qualifications
There are no specific qualifications required to intern in this project. However, interns must be patient, flexible as well as possess sincerity, love and a willingness to share their time and compassion with these people.
Intern's Responsibilities
Interns take care of HIV/AIDS-infected children and adults while simultaneously engaging them in educational, training activities aimed at increasing awareness and preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS in Ghana . Interns are mostly involved in counseling and educational activities in major hospitals and communities - raising personal risk perception among the youth, men and women by actively involving Ghanaians participatory HIV/AIDS preventive education through various districts.
Internship in Ghana : Internship Project and Role of Supervisor
One of the most distinguished features of IFRE's internships in Ghana is the guidance of supervisors. Whichever projects you choose, IFRE will assign a qualified supervisor to provide assistance for all interns throughout the duration of their chosen internship. Individuals filling the role of supervisor are usually either the director or chosen staff member of the project which interns choose. During your time as an international intern, you will be assigned a number of duties which Interns also perform (in this sense, there are very few differences between IFRE's volunteers and interns). Wherein exists the differences between interning and volunteering is that the internship allows individuals to become more deeply involved in their chosen project. In the internship, you will select a particular area of your interest related to HIV/AIDS in developing countries and explore the issue further with help of supervisor. Please note: the project supervisor DOES NOT develop internships as this is up to the intern to get as much or as little out of their projects. ALL participants should be proactive to ensure the ultimate success of their internships. Supervisors will provide at least five (5) hours each week to make certain that interns are adequately guided. However, interns may contact their supervisor at any time if requiring assistance.
Room/Food
IFRE arranges living accommodations, meals, and supervision for interns from the start to the end of their internships. During the first week of the language and culture program, interns stay in either a hostel or with a pre-approved host family in Accra where they will not only have easy access the heart of the city, but will also receive clean, simple and modest living accommodations as well as three (3) meals a day consisting of food native to the Ghanaian diet. Local fare usually consist of "fufu," "banku," and "yams." Furthermore, as part of the week-long culture and language program, interns will also receive Ghanaian cooking lessons.
