Free Time –Rio De Janeiro

You may be wondering how much free time you’ll have from your volunteer project, as you are likely quite eager to get out and explore Brazil. And who can blame you? IFRE’s projects are located in the exciting destination of Rio De Janeiro, a lively and colorful city that attracts visitors from around the world.

You’ll be happy to learn that you will work only an average of 5-6 hours per day at your Brazil volunteer project. That leaves plenty of free time in the evenings and on the weekends to get out and experience the sights and sounds of Rio and explore the surrounding areas.

While IFRE doesn’t plan excursions during your free time, our local staff is very familiar with the area and will be happy to offer advice and suggestions. Try to hit up the tourist hot spots as well as the more local hidden gems you can discover.

You’ll have no shortage of things to do! From lush landscapes, world famous beaches like Ipanema and Copacabana, the fascinating Museum of Tomorrow, to the vibrant Sunday morning market, Rio’s attractions are numerous and varied.

The city is filled with vibrant people and is well-known for carnivals, samba, and an active night life. As one of our Brazil volunteers you can also surf great breaks off Prainha, hike through Tijuca's rainforests, sail across Guanabára and dance the night away in Lapa. Make the most of your time abroad and explore everything Rio has to offer!

Weekend Exploration

Since you’ll have every weekend free, take this opportunity to go beyond Rio and visit some of the exciting surrounding areas! Here are some of our favorites:

Parque Nacional da Tijuca

This is a 39-sq-km forest preserve and offers you the chance to witness green forests, streams and cascades, and mountainous landscapes. The park is also home to many species of birds, monkeys and iguanas. The park administration provides you clear trail maps for free at the entrance, and this is a great spot to do some hiking.

Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina

This is the most pleasing national park in Brazil that provides our youthe chance to observe awide variety of flora, fauna, streams, and vast craggy plains all in one place.

Ariau Towers

Ariau Towers, one of the oldest boutique hotels in Brazil, is located on the coasts of the Amazon River. The hotel is furnished with 6 towers with 288 rooms and is widely recognized for luxurious facilities and big-shot guests, so this is a must for volunteers seeking a unique and high-end weekend escape. The hotel can be reached by riverboat, which is an adventure itself. Once you arrive, the hotel offers plenty of fun activities, including canoe rides and jungle walks, rainforest tours, observing the jungle’s nightlife, piranha fishing and rustic village excursions.

Christ the Redeemer

Even if you have never been to Rio, you have probably gotten a glimpse of this massive, iconic statue on tv and in movies. This art deco idol of Jesus Christ towers 100 feet above Rio De Janeiro and is an accepted sign of Christianity around the world and also a cultural icon in Brazil.

Visit Copacabana beach and experience soft sand and towering mountain views

Hike to the Corcovado Mountain also known as the hunchback

Spend time at Flamengo Park . to see the public landscapes and Modernist gardens

Visit Blue Lake Grotto and observe spectacularly flawless 200 ft. deep blue pool
