What Can I See During Weekend Explorations?

Volunteers in Ghana work 5 days a week from Monday to Friday. You will have the weekend free to experience the fascinating natural and cultural majesties of Ghana. During your weekend, you can visit national parks, lively local markets, historic landmarks, and much more. Some of the most popular places to explore during your weekend are:

Cape Coast Castle

This is one of the historical landmarks of Ghana that you should visit while participating in volunteer opportunities in Ghana. It is a grand, whitewashed castle in the heart of town that overlooks the sea. This was once the world's most important slave-holding site and provides a horrifying insight into the workings of the slave trade. A visit to the dungeons contrasts sharply with the governor’s bedroom, blessed with floor-to-ceiling windows and panoramic ocean views.

Kejetia Market (Kumasi)

Visit Kejetia Market, one of the most bustling places in Kumasi Ghana in the center of Kumasi. The rusting tin roofs of this huge market in a circular shanty town style make it look more like an alien mother ship that landed than a market. Inside, the throbbing Kejetia Market can be disorienting but is utterly captivating. Here you will find people from all walks of life busily commuting and making purchases for their daily needs.

Mole National Park

If you have an affinity for the gentle giants, the elephants, then this is the place for you. Get up close and personal with bus-sized elephants during your Ghana volunteering program. In addition to elephants you will get to see as many as 90 different species of mammals in this national park. Mole National Park is Ghana's largest at 4660 sq km and by far the best as wildlife viewing goes. The park consists of enchanting flat savannah forests that sprawl along the rivers and streams. To experience the park safely take part in daily walking and jeep safaris.

Jamestown (Accra)

Jamestown was once one of the most prosperous and renowned cities around the 17th-century, however it now happens to be one of the poorer neighborhoods of Ghana’s capital, Accra. Despite the poverty the city has managed to salvage and restore its beautifully disheveled colonial buildings, clapboard houses and corrugated iron shacks and to create a vibrant atmosphere. From Jamestown you can get involved in various activities when you join such as getting a great view of the city and the busy and colorful fishing harbor or climb to the top of the whitewashed lighthouse. These are just a few of the variety of activities you will get the chance to be a part of in Jamestown and the city of Accra through your Ghana volunteer opportunities.
