Namibia

Are you passionate about teaching and inspired by the joy of children learning something new? Do you often dream of exploring the world and immersing yourself in diverse cultures? If so, volunteering as a teacher in Namibia could be an ideal opportunity for you.

Namibia is a truly beautiful country, famous for its stunning scenery, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. From expansive deserts and towering sand dunes to rugged mountains and vast savannas, Namibia offers a wide variety of natural landscapes to explore.

Visitors can marvel at iconic sights such as the red dunes of Sossusvlei and the wildlife-rich plains of Etosha National Park, making it a destination filled with breathtaking experiences for nature lovers.

Despite its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Namibian faces several challenges, particularly in the realm of education. Many children in the country do not have access to quality education due to factors such as poverty, lack of qualified teachers, and underfunded schools. This results in a generation of youth who are deprived of essential learning opportunities, hindering their ability to reach their full potential and contribute effectively to society.

IFRE's Teaching English Program in Namibia aims to provide a solution to the educational challenges facing the country. By volunteering in this program, individuals can make a direct and positive impact on underprivileged communities by teaching English in schools that lack sufficient resources. Through our efforts, volunteers help bridge the gap in education, empowering students with the language skills needed to access broader opportunities in the future. Additionally, volunteers contribute to enhancing the quality of education by providing support to understaffed schools.

Skills and Qualifications:

The Namibia Volunteer Teaching Program welcomes individuals aged 18 and above, regardless of formal teaching experience. The primary requirement is a genuine passion for teaching and a desire to contribute to the education of young learners. Patience and problem-solving skills are essential for working with students of varying abilities.

While prior knowledge of the Namibian education system is beneficial, it is not mandatory. Volunteers in secondary schools should be capable of basic administrative tasks. While educational backgrounds are not required, individuals with teaching qualifications can provide valuable contributions to students' educational journeys.

Volunteer Responsibilities & Impact

Volunteering at the teaching program in Namibia offers a unique opportunity to positively impact San Bushman children while being surrounded by Namibia's stunning landscapes and wildlife. Located within the Namibia Wildlife Sanctuary, the school harmoniously coexists with nature, serving as a space where wildlife and communities intersect. Volunteers engage in various activities, following a rotational group system to ensure exposure to diverse experiences. For a comprehensive understanding of the project, it's recommended to book at least three weeks.

Volunteers play a vital role in the school's daily operations, with responsibilities including assisting teachers in lesson preparations and creating teaching aids, ensuring children's safety in the playground, actively participating in school projects, and maintaining cleanliness around the school premises.

Additionally, volunteers teach students new skills such as arts, crafts, music, and dance, plan and participate in extracurricular activities, and provide assistance with homework and school projects. Through these tasks, volunteers contribute to the holistic development and well-being of the students, fostering a nurturing learning environment within the community.

First Day : On your first day of volunteering, you will be escorted to your placement by a local coordinator and introduced to the placement staff. You will receive an orientation of your school, the tasks that you will be required to help with, your schedule.

Weekdays: This is an example of what a typical volunteer day will look like once you get started:

6.00 to 7.30 AM: Enjoy breakfast and get ready for a day of teaching and learning.
