Costa Rica

Teaching English

teach english in costa-rica

In Costa Rica, English is a required subject, but many rural and urban schools cannot adequately teach it because there are no funds for specialized teachers. What’s so important about learning English? Tourism brings in over 2 billion dollars a year into Costa Rica, only about 10% of the population currently speaks the English language they need to communicate with those tourists. With over a million people living in poverty, this lack of education is preventing hard-working Costa Ricans from improving their financial situation.

This project equally aims to provide quality English language classes to local schoolchildren. When you volunteer in San Jose on a mission trip spring break for high schoolers, you will be asked to instruct Basic English, both conversational and grammar, to the local schoolchildren and involve them in various fun-learning, sports, creative, arts and extracurricular activities. Your assignments will be given as according to your interests and skills.

By volunteering in Costa Rica, you will pave the way for a bright and successful future for your Costa Rican students. More job opportunities will be available to them as they grow older, breaking the cycle of poverty their families have become stuck in. Although you may not see them go on to get jobs, you can feel good about your work because the vocabulary lessons they learn from you will be steppingstones for their future language proficiency.

Work In An Orphanage

work in orphanage in guatemala

Unfortunately, poverty, abuse and alcoholism have left many children in Guatemala without families, depriving them of the parental love and care they need. There are a few orphanages trying their best to stop this problem by offering a safe environment where the kids can grow up and get an education, but they are chronically underfunded and undermanned, leaving them in desperate need of volunteers like you.

As a volunteer in orphanage projects in Guatemala on spring break high school mission trips you will typically teach English (4-5 hours a day) either at the orphanage or the day school the children attend. You will assist with day-to-day skills such as dressing properly, personal hygiene and travelling to school safely. In addition, you will be required to organize games, art lessons, singing, dancing as well as other creative, educational and fun extracurricular activities for the children.

By signing up to volunteer in a Guatemalan orphanage it will be an opportunity for you to change these children’s circumstances by providing love and care and nurturing them through both work and play, and since many orphanages are understaffed you will provide much-needed relief to the local workers, allowing them to care for and support even more children.  Your assistance helps keep these children off the street and provides them with a happy and productive childhood.

In association with a number of Argentinean non-profit organizations, municipalities and schools, IFRE places volunteers in “buddy roles” in an attempt to provide love, friendship, support and care for underprivileged children. Through your support, children will be off the streets and away from negative situations, which are counter-productive to their education and brighter future.
